Education

Advancement of its member's skills through education is part of the goals set out for the guild and, as such, is a most important attribute of the club. This strategy is accomplished through various means.

During each meeting demonstrations and seminars are given each with a particular aim. "Focus on Fundamentals" is a series of talks and demonstration presenting basic skills and techniques. Its purpose it to provide turners of all levels with information and the techniques used in basic turning. Items covered range from tool selection and maintenance, correct tool approach, to selection of type and cut of material.

At each meeting a group collects in a round table format to discuss design and offer constructive critique of fellow turners work. The aim is to exchange information on design and shape learned at various workshops, in literature and from personal experience.

An open gallery of pieces is displayed each meeting where members can see first hand completed pieces. A venue for members to ask "How did you do that" of the participants and provides an exposure to style, design, and finish.

At each meeting there is a guest speaker or demonstrator displaying style and technique of advanced wood turning or products used in the craft. At these sessions different ways of accomplishing a task are presented and interaction from the members provides information to the members.

The guild keeps a library of books and videos by various authors and respected turners. These are loaned on a monthly basis to provide exposure to the styles and techniques of some of the world renowned turners.

Several times a year world renowned turners are brought to Vancouver for demonstration seminars and classes. These classes are an opportunity for turners to gain hands on instruction in a small class setting at an affordable cost.
